Sometimes people say that Mark and Gemma were drifting apart before Gemma disappeared, which means that Mark and Gemma will not get a happily ever after, because the two of them were dysfunctional together, and innie Mark and Helly are a better fit.

I don't vibe with this line of reasoning, because we are only shown that Mark and Gemma had relationship issues after they started struggling with fertility. Longish post, because I cannot be concise, below the cut.

Mark Scout reacted to the fertility struggles with the same coping methods that we have seen from him time and time again: he tore apart the crib, just like he tore apart Gemma's photo and tore apart his own brain; and he lashed out at Gemma, just like he's been lashing out at everyone since Gemma disappeared; and he withdrew, stopped paying attention so much, just like he didn't really listen to Alexa on their first date, or just like he forgot to bring Ricken's book to the book reading, etc. Really, very typical stuff from him.

And my thing is...well. If it had been innie Mark and Helly struggling with fertility, would they not have had pretty much the exact same relationship issues?

Mark S and Mark Scout have the same unhealthy coping mechanisms, as far as I've seen. Mark S tore apart Petey's map, so why wouldn't he have taken apart a crib in his pain? Mark S lashed out at MDR after Cobel was harsh with him, and he was unkind to Helly after the calamitous ORTBO; why wouldn't he lash out at Helly in frustration if infertility was the problem? Mark S withdrew from the whole team after the ORTBO -- and if we're talking about not paying attention, well, he couldn't tell that Helena was posing as Helly even though Irving could. Why wouldn't he withdraw from Helly again if they were struggling with fertility instead? Hell, Mark S took the group photos with Petey off the desk and hid them in the closet, just like Mark Scout packed away Gemma's things and hid them in the basement. If innie Mark and Helly were married up above, and then Helly "died", why wouldn't Mark S pack up her things and hide them away as well?

As much as it's said that the innies and outies are different people, the two Marks, at the very least, follow a lot of the same patterns of behaviour. What I'm seeing is that if innie Mark and Helly were struggling with fertility, then Mark S would have reacted in the same way that Mark Scout did. The only factor that might cause a difference between the relationship struggles of o!Mark/Gemma and i!Mark/Helly is who Mark is in a relationship with. But I don't know, I don't think we've been shown that Helly has been able to revert innie Mark's destructive coping mechanisms, just like Gemma didn't seem to be able to with outie Mark.

Essentially, I don't think the argument that "Outie Mark and Gemma's relationship was falling apart, and therefore innie Mark and Helly are a better fit" really holds up. If outie Mark and Gemma's relationship was falling apart, it was because they were going through something that was really tough. And if innie Mark and Helly were going through the same thing, well, as far as we've seen, that would have caused their relationship to "fall apart" as well. It would be strange if innie Mark just overcame all of his unhealthy coping mechanisms with no explanation.

So if Mark Scout and Gemma are inherently dysfunctional, then Mark S and Helly are, as well. If infertility was the only reason that Mark Scout and Gemma became dysfunctional, then I think that's not really a strong reason to say that Mark S and Helly are a better pair.

For what it's worth, I don't think that outie Mark and Gemma's relationship was falling apart. They were struggling, for sure, but after the scenes where they snapped at each other, we saw them curled up together on the couch. Mark wasn't listening to Gemma the night she disappeared, but she rightfully prodded, and then he did listen, and when he told her he loved her, it looked and sounded genuine. I just think that either Mark would be an irritating guy to be married to, but whoever he is, if he's in love with you, he's in it for real.

This is not a post to say that Mark/Gemma is better than Mark/Helly. It's just to explain why this argument that I've seen doesn't hold up for me.

THOUGHTS ON TODAY'S CAFAE LATTE EPISODE (aka, what I think and don't think is happening to JC and why)

I don't think it's a relapse. JC was in Nicole's car and was on their way to her house after a dental appointment. They would've at least texted her to say they were sick, if they'd lie at all. Also, divination would work as JC can't block it themself and the charms in Nicole's car are hers so likely wouldn't register her magic as a threat.

I don't think that JC got arrested. There's a unicorn horn in Nicole's car and they would've had a phone call by then, likely to Bob, Cyrus, or Nicole to get them out or help them. Also, JC's location on their phone wouldn't be turned off and (unless the cops are particularly magical) divination would work.

I don't think that JC owes an evil fae. When they were introduced they were mostly clueless about the fae, if they had experience with a particular malicious one then they would be alot less likely to give Bob their name. Also, it would've been brought up by now as they are notoriously bad at masking their emotions so, even if they didn't want the help, the truth would've likely been dragged out of them.

Also, I don't think that JC got taken by ICE. Alongi typically references and includes themes to talk about them and their effects. Having JC get grabbed by the American organisation that is currently sending people to "camps" in El Salvador would be incredibly insensitive to the people who are currently genuinely suffering in horrific conditions.

Finally, CM Alongi has said in a newsletter a few months ago that she was planning for someone to be brought to the fae realm, specifically Bob's home kingdom Ivae, and has recently shown props that would indicate that. This makes the most sense to me because JC hasn't had anything paranormal happen to them directly yet. Yes, they practically throw themself at any theat but they're never really the target. Think about it!

-Nicole got mind controlled by Vlad

-Bob got cursed with bad luck after being held captive

-Rethu got a love spell lobbed at them + their nibbling was stolen

-Cyrus got fae-napped + Erik made a stupid deal with a coven

Each time, JC got directly involved in the situation but it wasn't targeted to them. Also, for a human surrounded by paras, they are scarily comfortable with their name being said and shared. Ergo, if they did get captured by the fae realm it would give Alongi a wonderful opportunity to exploit this.

Finally, the other character that constantly throws themself in danger? Bob. She's the powerhouse, the foundations and founder of the Cafae, she is the Iron Witch. If Alongi follows the Prologue of her unreleased book then she literally cannot help them as magic is in place to stop her from entering the fae realm. Therefore, it would objectively be the most dangerous situation the Cafae crew have been in.

Additionally, JC would be considered the weakest and the least useful by fae standards. Most of the Cafae are paranormies so, even though Drek isn't exactly tough, they have magical value. The ones who are human (Nicole and Husniya)? Husniya has links to human authorities and formal training and Nicole is a practiced witch who was able to take down a faeire circle within a month or two of training. JC, however? Isn't magic at all and the only fighting training they've were gangs and juvie. To the fae that Bob rebelled against, they are just a man (epic the musical ref.). They are just a human that Bob has taken a liking to, potential bait, and they have no magic to protect them from the fae.

I woke up thinking about this and I have to get it off my chest before the new episode Wandee Goodday episode tomorrow. Under the cut because I’m not tagging this for reasons and I don’t want to accidentally spoil anyone. But I have GOT to say this before I explode

I am going to try to be as kind as I possibly can while talking about this but I make no promises.

I think the take that the kiss was a dream/is a fakeout is so incredibly dumb. To be clear, the take is dumb, not the people that are saying that. There is nuance please do not take this as a personal attack.

It would make absolutely zero narrative sense for that kiss to be fake. But Rae, I hear you all saying, they did a fakeout in The Eclipse and they’ve gone out of their way to show clips of that show!

Okay, and? Wandee Goodday is a different show. This kiss has more importance and more meaning to the story and the characters than the kiss in The Eclipse had. If the kiss is not real and did not happen it would remove the entire emotional impact of the first kiss. The kiss was perfect in its imperfection. It simultaneously lived up to and failed Dee’s fantasies. There is nothing that a fakeout kiss could do narratively that that specific first kiss for Dee didn’t already do.

A fakeout kiss would be a disservice to the narrative, the characters, the audience, and the writer’s themselves. And assuming they did so is incredibly rude to the people who have created such a phenomenal show so far. I know gmmtv does not have the best track record but we have no reason to believe the kiss is fake other than this one other show that was telling a completely different story with completing different characters whose actions and motivations are completely different did it. It made sense for The Eclipse. It does not make sense for Wandee Goodday.

In fact, I am so confident in my assessment that the kiss is real that if I am wrong and it is fake (I’m not and it’s not), that I will go buy a ghost pepper and record my white ass with no spile tolerance eating it. Meaning that I would show my full face here and y’all know I do not do that.

I’m just so tired of seeing that wild ass theory with no thought behind it other than “what if.” And don’t come at me with “but Dee was in Japan!” Okay and? He took a flight back? There was an obvious and visual passage of time. That’s how time works. It was day when Dee got the call from Kao in Japan, and it was night when he kissed Yak. Almost like he took a flight that took a few hours.

I think it’s important that we assume good intentions with the media we consume, especially BL, and especially a sex positivis BL like Wandee Goodday that is giving us representation and messaging that it doesnot need to go out of its way to give us. Not every show is trying to pull a gotcha on its audience. Wandee Goodday is making a good faith effort to engage with its queer audience. We should let it.

I see a lot of stuff with Gimli losing his temper and Legolas having to hold him back from charging in axe-first at whatever has angered him (sometimes even picking him up to stop him) and admittedly I love this!

But also consider: almost every time somebody offends or insults Gimli in the books, his reaction is along the lines of declaring “I would take offense at your words, save that you are too ignorant to know how wrong they are” in I assume just the most refined, lofty voice you can imagine.

Whereas Éomer threatens Gimli one (1) time in front of Legolas and our Mirkwood madlad is immediately ready to throw-down with half* of Rohan’s army.

I’m saying what I would like to see more of is Legolas losing his temper, and Gimli being the cool-headed half of the pair that has to hold his lanky longshanks boyfriend back from doing a murder.
